Market Overview
The Philippine stock market ended the week back in negative territory, as investors locked in profits following Thursday’s sharp rebound.
The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange Index(PSEi) declined by 1.02 per cent, or 65.34 points, to close at 6,333.26.
The broader All Shares Index also fell, down 0.54 per cent to 3,599.31.
Overall, the market struggled to sustain upward momentum, with caution returning after the brief rally.
Profit Taking Despite Peso Strength
The PSEi tested the 6,300 support level, reflecting a more defensive short-term stance among investors.
This pullback occurred despite the Philippine peso strengthening against the US dollar, a factor that would normally support equities. Instead, investors opted to take profits after Thursday’s gains, pointing to near-term consolidation rather than panic selling.
Global Context and Investor Positioning
Investor sentiment was also influenced by global developments.
Recent US data showed modest core inflation, reinforcing expectations that the US Federal Reserve is likely to keep policy rates unchanged at its next meeting.
Against this backdrop, investors chose to reassess positions and reduce risk exposure, particularly ahead of the weekend.
Sector Performance
Sector performance was broadly negative.
All sectors ended lower except Mining and Oil, which rose by 2.76 per cent, making it the only sector to finish in positive territory.
- Financials recorded the steepest decline, down 1.16 per cent
- Property followed, slipping 0.94 per cent
- Holdings, services, and industrials also closed in the red
The pattern highlights continued pressure on interest-rate-sensitive and domestic sectors, while resource-related stocks showed relative resilience.
Most Actively Traded Stocks
Among individual stocks, International Container Terminal Services, Inc.(ICTSI) remained the most actively traded, declining 1.11 per cent to PHP 623.
Other actively traded names included:
- Ayala Land, Inc., down 2.00 per cent to PHP 22.05
- Bank of the Philippine Islands, down 1.69 per cent to PHP 116
Market breadth remained negative, underscoring the cautious tone.
Liquidity and Market Breadth
Total market value turnover declined to PHP 6.29 billion, from PHP 6.60 billion in the previous session.
Decliners outnumbered advancers 119 to 86, while 59 stocks ended unchanged, confirming a risk-off bias as the week came to a close.
Weekly Takeaway
This week’s decline does not indicate a breakdown of the broader market trend, but rather a pause following recent gains.
The 6,300 level remains a key psychological and technical support for the PSEi.
Until clearer signals emerge—particularly on global monetary policy and domestic economic data—the market is likely to remain range-bound, with investors favouring selective and defensive positioning.
