Philippine Stocks Slide 1.48% as ICTSI Plunges — PSEi Market Wrap | 14 October 2026

🇬🇧 English | Philippine Stock Market Report

The Philippine stock market extended its losses on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, as heavy selling in International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) dragged the benchmark index lower.

The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) declined by 84.31 points, or 1.48%, to close at 5,617.23.

This marked the second consecutive session of losses, bringing the index closer to the psychologically important 5,600 level.

📉 ICTSI plunges 6.59%, dragging down Services

The Services sector recorded the sharpest decline, falling 4.97%.

The main contributor was ICTSI, one of the largest companies listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange.

ICTSI shares plunged 6.59%, from ₱872.00 to ₱814.50, placing considerable downward pressure on the benchmark index.

However, the weakness was not uniform across the market.

Financials gained 0.99%, while Mining and Oil advanced 0.51%. Industrials, Holding Firms and Property recorded relatively modest declines of less than 0.1%.

This suggests that Wednesday’s sharp fall in the PSEi was largely influenced by concentrated selling in major Services stocks, particularly ICTSI, rather than equally severe losses across all sectors.

Market breadth remained negative, with 103 declining stocks against 66 advancers.

Total trading value reached approximately ₱6.49 billion.

💰 What is weighing on Philippine equities?

Investor sentiment remains under pressure from concerns about economic growth, rising inflation and uncertainty surrounding monetary policy.

According to The Philippine Star’s 14 October report covering the previous trading session, market analysts highlighted expectations of another interest rate increase by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), alongside elevated bond yields.

These factors have contributed to a cautious investment environment.

However, they should be distinguished from the immediate cause of Wednesday’s decline.

The clearest observable driver of the 14 October sell-off was the sharp fall in ICTSI shares. A company-specific explanation for that fall has not yet been independently established.

💵 Philippine peso weakens to ₱62.870 per US dollar

The Philippine peso also weakened during Wednesday’s trading session.

USD/PHP closed at ₱62.870, representing a depreciation of approximately seven centavos compared with the previous session.

The exchange rate is once again approaching the record-low closing level of ₱62.90 recorded on 8 October.

A weaker peso may increase the cost of imported goods and contribute to inflationary pressures.

It may also reduce US dollar-denominated returns for foreign investors holding Philippine equities.

🔎 What should investors watch next?

With the PSEi closing at 5,617, attention is shifting towards whether the index can maintain its position above 5,600.

Investors will also be watching for signs of stabilisation in ICTSI, further movements in the peso and the upcoming BSP monetary policy decision scheduled for 22 October.

As a long-term investor in Philippine equities, I believe it is important to distinguish short-term market volatility from changes in underlying corporate fundamentals.

While current market conditions remain challenging, the gains in Financials and Mining and Oil suggest that some areas of the market are still attracting buyers.

A sustained recovery will require broader participation across sectors, rather than relying on a handful of heavyweight stocks.

For now, caution remains warranted as the Philippine market searches for a more stable direction.
